Three decisions before choosing a date
Two evenings or Friday/Saturday?
Compare the second day as carefully as the first. An evening pair can fit around a working day, while a Friday/Saturday pair also needs a clear Saturday morning. Use the times on the actual course card; all blocks must be attended.
Where will you leave from?
Your first journey may start at work and the next at home. Pick the relevant arrival guide for each day, save the LAB address and leave time for the room display at the entrance. A train arrival at HB is not yet arrival in class.
Which rules apply to your dates?
The current 2026 offer and the new 2027 course format differ. Read the dated explanation below before planning a theory-test booking across the year change. For an individual licence-exchange case, confirm the required training with your road traffic office.
What Is the VKU Course?
The VKU (Verkehrskundeunterricht) is Switzerland's mandatory traffic-awareness course for new drivers. It takes eight hours in total — two sessions of four hours each — and ends with a certificate, not an exam. The certificate is recognised throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein, so one course works no matter where you take your driving test.
You'll find it listed in your licence-journey paperwork asVerkehrskunde — the German name for the traffic-awareness course. Attending ours in English changes nothing about its official status. More answers in the FAQ below.
What to Expect from Your VKU Course in English
For the current 2026 dates, the eight teaching hours are grouped into two days. Some pairs use two evenings; others combine a Friday evening with Saturday morning. All blocks belong to one booking. The four teaching themes below help you connect the course to situations you already encounter on your commute. There is no final exam; full attendance is required.

Find LAB via the Europaallee Exit
The course venue is the LAB building at Lagerstrasse 2, 8004 Zurich, on the PH campus beside the main station. From HB, follow Europaallee signs to the campus square. The screen beside the LAB entrance tells you which room to use. Allow for the walk from your platform and arrive at the room ten minutes before the session starts.

What is the VKU?
VKU stands for Verkehrskundeunterricht — Switzerland's mandatory traffic-awareness course for new drivers. It is an 8-hour course split into two 4-hour sessions that bridges the gap between the theory test and practical driving experience.
When should I take the VKU?
For 2026, take the VKU after passing theory and receiving your learner’s permit. You must complete the VKU course before registering for the practical driving exam — and from 2027 you'll need it even earlier, before the theory exam itself (see the callout above).
How long is the VKU certificate valid?
The VKU certificate no longer expires — since 1 January 2021 it stays valid for life. It is recognised by all cantonal road traffic offices in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
What should I bring to the course?
For a 2026 course, bring a valid ID or passport and your valid Swiss learner’s permit. Everything else — materials, handouts and study videos — is included.
How much English do I need?
The whole course runs in plain, clear English — slides, videos and discussion included. You need English at B2 level to follow the teaching and take part in discussion; questions are welcome.
Do I need the VKU with a foreign license?
It depends on where your licence was issued and how you're converting it. Our guide to licence exchange explains the rules and tells you exactly whether the VKU applies to you.
Is there an exam at the end?
No — the VKU has no final test. Attend both sessions and you'll receive your official certificate on the spot.

Dario Lichtensteiger brings his work in driver education and his studies at the Lucerne University of Education to the course. His master’s thesis examined how feedback influences the development of driving competence. That background connects the classroom topics with the process of learning a practical skill, rather than simply memorising a rule.
He teaches in English and describes his approach as enthusiastic and humorous. For your own preparation, bring a real traffic situation that puzzled you, or a question about feedback you received during a lesson.
