Understanding the Swiss Driving License Process as an Expat

The Swiss driving license process can seem confusing at first, especially if you're coming from a country with different requirements. Let's break it down step by step.

1

Can You Exchange Your License?

Check first if you can exchange your existing license:

  • EU/EFTA, USA, Canada, etc.: Usually direct exchange or test drive only (NO VKU needed).
  • Other countries (within 1 year): Mandatory "Kontrollfahrt" (test drive). If passed, NO VKU needed.
  • Missed deadline or failed test: You must restart the process (Theory → Learner's Permit → VKU → Exam).

2

Preparation Steps

Before you can get a learner's permit, you need:

  • ✅ Valid residence permit (B, C, or L permit)
  • ✅ Vision test (Sehtest) – done at any optician
  • First aid course (Nothelferkurs) – 10 hours, available in English

These requirements are the same for everyone, regardless of nationality.

3

Theory Test

Pass the Swiss theory test to get your learner's permit:

Once you pass, you'll receive your Swiss Learner's Permit (Lernfahrausweis), which is valid for 2 years.

4

VKU Course (You Are Here!)

Complete the mandatory 8-hour VKU course in English:

  • ✅ 8 hours over 2 days (legally required to split)
  • ✅ No final exam—just attend both sessions
  • ✅ Receive official certificate immediately
  • ✅ Certificate valid throughout Switzerland, never expires

👉 This is what we offer at DriveLab—the VKU in 100% English!

5

Driving Lessons

Take practical driving lessons with a certified instructor:

Your instructor will tell you when you're ready for the practical exam.

6

Practical Driving Exam

Pass the final practical exam to get your Swiss license:

  • ✅ 45-minute test with a government examiner
  • ✅ Conducted in German, but you can request an interpreter
  • ✅ Once you pass, you receive your Swiss driving license!

You must have completed the VKU before you can register for this exam.

Key Swiss Traffic Rules Expats Should Know

Swiss traffic rules have some unique features that might be different from what you're used to. Here are the most important ones:

🚗 Priority to the Right

In Switzerland, at unmarked intersections, vehicles coming from the right have priority. This is different from many countries where the main road automatically has priority.

🚊 Trams Always Have Priority

Trams in Zurich and other Swiss cities always have priority, even when they're coming from the left or merging into traffic. Never cut off a tram!

🚸 Pedestrian Crossings (Zebra Stripes)

You must stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings if they show intent to cross. Swiss drivers take this very seriously, and fines are high.

🛣️ Motorway (Autobahn) Rules

You need a motorway vignette (CHF 40/year) to use Swiss motorways. Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on rural roads, 50 km/h in towns.

❄️ Winter Driving

While winter tires aren't legally required, you're liable for accidents caused by inadequate tires. Most Swiss drivers use winter tires from October to Easter.

🍷 Zero Tolerance for Alcohol

The legal limit is 0.5‰ (0.05%), but penalties are severe. Many Swiss drivers don't drink at all before driving. Better safe than sorry!

💡 Good to know: All of these rules and more are covered in detail during our VKU English course. You'll learn not just the rules, but the why behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions: VKU for Expats

Can I take the VKU in English in Switzerland?

Yes! In Zurich, you can complete the mandatory VKU course entirely in English. Our course at DriveLab is 100% in English—instruction, materials, videos, and certificate—making it perfect for expats and international residents.

Do I need the VKU if I already have a foreign driving license?

In most cases, NO.

  • EU/EFTA & many others (USA, Canada, Japan, etc.): Direct exchange or test drive ("Kontrollfahrt") only. No VKU.
  • Other countries (within 1 year): You take a practical test ("Kontrollfahrt"). If you pass, no VKU is needed.
  • Exception: If you fail the test drive or miss the 1-year exchange deadline, you must start from scratch. Then, the VKU is mandatory.

Check our guide on license exchange.

Can I do the VKU voluntarily to prepare for the test drive?

Yes, but we do not recommend it. Without a Swiss learner's permit, we cannot issue a valid VKU certificate. If you fail the test drive and have to restart the process, you might need to repeat the VKU. We recommend private driving lessons instead.

What's the process for expats to get a Swiss driving license?

For expats who cannot exchange their license, the process is:

  1. Complete a vision test and first aid course
  2. Pass the Swiss theory test (available in English)
  3. Obtain your learner's permit (Lernfahrausweis)
  4. Complete the VKU course (8 hours in English—this is what we offer!)
  5. Take driving lessons with a certified instructor
  6. Pass the practical driving exam

The entire process typically takes 3-6 months, depending on your learning speed.

Do I need to speak German for the VKU?

No! Our VKU course is conducted 100% in English. You don't need any German language skills. However, for the practical driving exam, you may want to request an interpreter if you're not comfortable with German.

How long is the VKU certificate valid?

Since January 1, 2021, the VKU certificate never expires. Once you complete the course, your certificate is valid indefinitely throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Can I start the VKU before I pass the theory test?

Technically, yes—you can attend the VKU even before passing your theory test. However, it's highly recommended to pass the theory test first, as you'll better understand the VKU content if you already have basic traffic knowledge.

Is the VKU a test or an exam?

No! The VKU is not a test or exam. It's a course where you learn practical traffic skills. You simply need to attend both 4-hour sessions, and you'll receive your certificate at the end. There's no final test.

What if I don't understand something during the VKU?

Please ask! Our instructor, Dario, encourages questions and creates a friendly, open learning environment. Many expats have similar questions, and your classmates will likely appreciate you asking too.
